Anti-anti-vaxers

Dear Editor,
I am outraged over the COVID-19 vaccination protests. The argument is mandatory vaccinations are a violation of their constitutional rights. How can a person have life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness when many who are not vaccinated are getting sick and dying?
Many of these same people don’t want their children vaccinated or wearing masks in school. Do they want their children sick and potentially dying from this dreaded disease?
Please everyone listen to the science and get vaccinated, because those you love depend on you to do so.
Sincerely Yours,
Frederick R. Bedell Jr.

Join the Scouts

Dear Editor,
Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio recently visited Ten Mile River Scout Camp in upstate New York in support of scouting.
Bishop DiMarzio was a Boy Scout, and earned the title of Life Scout, the organization’s second-highest rank. I applaud the bishop for his support of scouting.
I was a Cub Scout, Boy Scout and Explorer Scout. I learned a lot about community service, charity, and patriotism.
Today, I am Grand Knight of St. Anastasia Knights of Columbus Council #5911 in Douglaston and twice a year run a Blood Drive. I do this with the help of Boy Scout Troop #153, whose help is immeasurable.
Membership in the Boy Scouts has dropped nationwide, which I find quite troubling. I urge parents to encourage their children to join the Boy Scouts. We need leaders with high ideas, and the Boy Scouts provide that.
Sincerely,
Frederick R. Bedell, Jr.

Statue destruction

Dear Editor,
I am appalled by the act of vandalism over the weekend that destroyed two 84-year-old statues at Our Lady of Mercy Church in Forest Hills.
This type of hatred must end. I hope the person who committed this act is captured soon.
Sincerely,
Frederick R. Bedell, Jr.

Give life

Dear Editor,
Our Lady of the Snows Church at258-15 80th Avenue in Floral Park will host a blood drive on Sunday, July 18, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. This is a great opportunity to truly give the gift of life by donating blood.
Did you know one in three will need blood some time in their life?
Blood last only 42 days, and your donation is critically important due to the pandemic. So, please donate the gift of life if you can.
Sincerely,
Frederick R. Bedell, Jr.

Time to reflect

Dear Editor,
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, there will be no Little Neck/Douglaston Memorial Day parade this year.
However, there will be a dedication and wreath-laying ceremony at the Veteran Memorial by American Legion Post #103 on the grounds of St. Anastasia Parish near Alameda Avenue and Northern Boulevard in Douglaston.
It will take place on Memorial Day at 10:30 am.
There will be no parade, but we can still say a prayer for those serving our country today. We can also offer a moment of silence for all those who gave the ultimate sacrifice to keep us free.
Sincerely,
Frederick R. Bedell, Jr.

Columbus dismissal

Dear Editor,
The Department of Education has eliminated Columbus Day as a school holiday. Instead, October 11th, will be known as Italian Heritage Day/Indigenous People’s Day.
I find this act by DOE most troubling.
I’m grand knight of St. Anastasia Knights of Columbus Council #5911 in Douglaston, and support the fact that Christopher Columbus, with his faults like the rest of humanity, opened up a new world with unlimited possibilities.
Our organization was founded in 1882 by Father Michael McGivney to help immigrants. I believe Christopher Columbus should be remembered for the good things he accomplished and not the negative.
Sincerely,
Frederick R. Bedell Jr.
