Car Accident & Traffic Death Breakdown For NYC in 21/22

Transportation Alternatives, a street safety group, has released new data on traffic in New York City and fatal accidents, and the news is bad. NYC has already seen a deadly year for motor vehicle accidents in 2022, one of the worst in the current decade. Safety advocates are demanding prompt action be taken to reverse this trend.

Car Accident Traffic Statistics For New York City In 2021 And 2022

More NYC traffic deaths have occurred in the city during the first three months of 2022 compared to the first quarter of any year since 2014, NY Daily News said in its review of the Transportation Alternatives report. According to the data, 59 people have died in car accidents in NYC so far in 2022, compared to 41 people who died in the same quarter last year. If the numbers continue their current trajectory, 2022 could be the deadliest year for traffic deaths in the city in the decade, even surpassing the number in 2021, which had the highest number of traffic deaths since 2014.

Types Of NYC Traffic Deaths

The data shows the following grisly information for the first quarter of 2022:

29 pedestrians were killed in NYC car accidents

8 minors died in motor vehicle crashes

24 percent of the fatalities occurred on city streets with speed limits higher than 25 mph

An estimated 236 traffic fatalities are expected to occur if the current trends are not reversed during the year.

Advocates Demand Action

In 2014, former Mayor Bill de Blasio launched the Vision Zero Program, which hoped to prevent traffic fatalities across the five boroughs. However, advocates say that too many New Yorkers are senselessly dying in NYC traffic accidents while crossing the street, waiting for the bus, or riding in a car. The authors of the report are demanding the City Council pour $3.1 billion into the city’s budget to implement New York City’s Department of Transportation’s street plans, which would add bike lanes and redesign hundreds of intersections across the city to make streets safer for all road users.

Advocates are also demanding that the city pass a law that would give it control over the city’s street camera program. This would allow it to install more traffic cameras and end restrictions that limit when tickets can be issued to people speeding or running red lights.

Porcelli: The Other Side of Education (12/1)

CTE Shop Class: Now It’s High-Tech

CTE is… Smart Education

By Mike Porcelli

Recently, I’ve written about the many educational opportunities our country offers. On the Fourth of July, I wrote that our founders believed in our right to pursue, “our happiest careers,” and called for a revolution to restore trade education for all who need it.

Why are some students still deprived of their best education options? Based on my 60 years of observing the education system, from vocational student, to teacher, to advisor and now advocate, the answer is…in the first half of the last century, schools produced the skilled workers who built and maintained the technology that made us a superpower. What happened to the schools that made that possible?

Many WWII veterans used the GI Bill to attend college, some used military and trade skills to get jobs, while others used them to start businesses. When my generation entered school, most college-grad parents thought their education made them “superior,” to those without degrees and sought that same status for their children, while workers without college felt somehow “inferior” to their “educated” contemporaries.

They too, wanted that higher status for their children. As a result, most parents encouraged us to get college degrees, believing that was our best course.

Many educators continue to promote that thought, regardless of students’ needs and abilities. They urge, college is the recommended path for everyone, except the “unintelligent.” This philosophy, espoused by most educators, is the basis for the decline of trade education that caused the current skilled-worker shortage.

But don’t despair – there’s still hope. Since long before I began calling for a revolution to correct the educational malpractice of recent decades, Mike Rowe has been leading the charge to restore respect for skilled trade workers everywhere. Those who he constantly says, use their trade skills to make modern civilization possible.

In his two decades of: speeches, TV and radio shows, books, podcasts and interviews, Mike “Dirty-Jobs” Rowe has consistently advocated for an appreciation of skilled workers – from auto and spaceship mechanics, to plumbers, welders and all trades in between. Each one is essential.

Every generation since mine has been raised on the slogan: “Work smarter, not harder” – the motto of the college-for-all mindset. The Mike Rowe Works Foundation, says that’s a dumb idea, and has changed it to reflect my guiding principle since high school – work smart and hard.

He understands that trade jobs are also high-tech jobs, requiring hard work plus advanced training, from a variety of sources – not just college.

The restoration of trade education is the solution to the critical skilled worker shortage. To accomplish this, I suggest the continuing education requirements for every school teacher and administrator, including studying Mike Rowe’s work at: https://www.mikeroweworks.org/ , where they can learn more about useful education – than they did in college.

CTE is smarter for half our students. Make it available to all who need it.

Academic & Trade Education are Two Sides of a Coin. This column explores the impact of CTE programs on students, society, and the economy.

The Best Hangover Cure; Just One Vitamin IV & Voilà

Today, health-conscious people can easily reap the benefits of IV vitamin therapy in the comfort of their provider’s office – or sometimes in their own homes. But even though the treatment’s been around for decades, IV therapy with vitamins is still brand new to some people.

If you’re one of those people, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! And if you’re one of those people who aims to have a healthy immune system, this article will cover everything you need to know about IV vitamin therapy and more!

What Is IV Therapy?

IV therapy is one of those terms that gets thrown around – everyone’s expected to know what it means. However, if you’re unsure of what IV therapy is, don’t worry. That’s what we’re here for! Let’s break the term IV Therapy down to its simplest form.

IV stands for intravenous. Intravenous means “administered through the veins .” An IV drip usually consists of an IV bag, a hollow needle, and a long tube that leads from the bag to the needle.

The therapy part refers to what the bag administers into the veins. In the case of IV vitamin therapy, the bag delivers fluid that contains vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients directly into your bloodstream. In addition, when it’s for medical IV treatment, the fluid may also contain medication.

Now that we’ve cleared that up, you may be wondering how the IV fluid gets into your veins. A nurse or other practitioner inserts the hollow needle into a vein – usually in your arm. The IV vitamin treatment fluids drip from the bag down into the tube, through the needle, and into your vein. Easy!

How Does Vitamin IV For A Hangover Work?

To understand why an IV hangover cure might work, let’s first look at the typical hangover symptoms. These include:

Fatigue and weakness

Thirst and dry mouth

Sensitivity to light and sound

Nausea and/or vomiting

Headaches

Dizziness

These symptoms generally last about 24 hours. Vitamin IV therapy allows delivering various intravenous fluids to your body immediately without you consuming anything orally (which is often difficult due to nausea). Plus, the cocktail of vitamins for a hangover often includes anti-nausea and pain medication as well. Since the IV drip allows the nutrients, fluids, and medication to bypass your digestive system – going directly into your bloodstream – it speeds up your recovery time.

What Are The Common Ingredients In A Vitamin IV For Hangovers?

There are several types of vitamin IV hangover drips, but most contain four essential components – water, vitamins, electrolytes, and glutathione. Water acts as a hydrating solution to help improve blood circulation and flush toxins through the kidneys faster. Vitamins such as B1, B12, C, calcium, amino acids, zinc, and folic acid are useful since alcohol impairs the absorption and use of vitamins and minerals in the gut. Electrolytes, such as potassium and sodium, help with fatigue and vomiting. And glutathione is an antioxidant that helps detoxify the liver, as well as provide numerous other benefits.

For the safest therapy, you should look for a reputable healthcare provider who can monitor the infusion. If you had too much to drink last night and are suffering from a hangover you can get treatment via hangover relief IV therapy.

Palisades Sinfonietta presents orchestra concert, orchestral music returns to Mary’s Nativity Church

First concert since passing of QSO maestro Dong-hyun Kim

By Stephanie Meditz

news@queensledger.com

Prior to 2020, Queensboro Symphony Orchestra often performed at Mary’s Nativity Church.

For the first time in two years, Mary’s Nativity Church in Flushing will ring in the Advent season with orchestral music.

On Sunday, Dec. 4 at 4 p.m., the Palisades Sinfonietta will present a concert featuring soprano TracyLynn Conner and composer Paul Joseph.

The Palisades Sinfonietta was founded by Queensboro Symphony Orchestra’s Leonard Birnbaum after the death of QSO maestro Dong-hyun Kim in 2020.

Since then, Mary’s Nativity has not presented any orchestral concerts.

The concert will allow Queens residents to see classical music up close.

As music director of Mary’s Nativity, Joseph collaborated with Birnbaum and the clergy to resume the performances, and they resolved to put on an Advent concert.

“[The concerts] were very popular. After the pandemic, people were asking if we’ll get the concerts going again, so a lot of people want to see them,” Joseph said. “We had a pretty good following that would come out to our concerts.”

At the concert, Joseph will premiere his composition, “Grand Advent-ure,” a 15-minute orchestral fantasy derived from traditional Advent hymns.

A lifelong musician, he has composed several orchestral pieces, including “The King of the Mask” debuted by QSO in 2015.

“When you’re an organist at a church, you have to be able to…fill in musical spaces with improvisations,” he said. “I get lots of opportunities in church to improvise on the hymns that we’re playing that day. So it’s almost like the arrangement of the piece was an outgrowth of those improvisations, but in a more refined form.”

TracyLynn Conner said that “Grand Advent-ure” perfectly represents the joy and preparation of Advent.

Joseph will accompany her on the piano as she sings Bach’s sacred aria, “Erbame dich, mein Gott” from St. Matthew Passion.

Composer, pianist and Mary’s Nativity music director Paul Joseph will premiere his piece, “Grand Advent-ure,” at the concert.

Conner, the cantor for Mary’s Nativity, holds a degree in opera performance and has been involved in musical theater on Long Island for over 20 years.

This is her first concert singing as a member of the Mary’s Nativity parish.

“For artists during the pandemic, it was very hard for us not performing, because that’s what we do. It’s also our therapy in life,” she said. “To get back to making music with other people, I couldn’t stop smiling during that rehearsal. The musicians are so talented and to be part of it feels like magic again…I think people will be very pleasantly surprised at how good it feels to have live music back in their lives.”

To conclude the concert, the Palisades Sinfonietta will perform Franz Schubert’s Symphony No. 3.

“It’s a great thing to bring the music back and everything, and also be able to have the opportunity to compose something for it,” Joseph said. “There’s also a little bit of bittersweetness. It’s a memoriam. There’s a memory of [Kim] involved too, because obviously his shadow is over this. There’s a whole mix of emotions here.”

The concert is free will offering, meaning that admission is free but donations will be accepted.

“The church is a wonderful place to see classical music. This is why the concerts are so popular…it’s a big, resonant space,” Joseph said. “Also, people get a chance to see great music really up close. Most of the time, they would have to go into Manhattan and take a trip there and spend a lot of money. Here, you don’t have to do that.”
