Last week was the annual meeting of the U.N. General Assembly and it didn’t disappoint. World leaders descended on the city, and Mayor Mamdani was dragged into both the national and international limelight, and in ways that didn’t make him look terribly good.
Mamdani started the week with a Monday afternoon meeting with President Trump. It was described by everyone as a love fest. So much so that all the leftwing media outlets, including CNN and the station formerly known as MSNBC, were doing backflips to try to justify Mamdani’s incredibly friendly meeting with a President that they often describe as a fascist or a criminal. The NY Times went so far as to describe the meeting as “warm, respectful and perhaps even productive.”
While all these talking heads tried to applaud Mamdani for “standing up” to Trump for the things he thinks NYC needs, Mamdani was forced to talk about their “mutual love” for the city and the desire they both share to see NYC become great again. In their meeting, which lasted just over an hour, Mamdani said he brought up a wide range of issues, from affordability to Temporary Protected Status for Haitians, and followed up on their conversation from earlier this year on building a massive housing complex at Sunnyside Yards in Queens.
However, no details or commitments were announced in the very chummy joint press conference that followed the meeting, making it appear that Mamdani came away with no actual deliverables. After months of failure to make any real headway on his agenda, particularly his main promise to make NYC more affordable, this was nothing less than a disaster for Mamdani.
Additionally, many of Mamdani’s supporters were beside themselves that Mamdani would “normalize” Trump and show that people across the aisle could be worked with and that they were not exclusively and enemy that needed to be destroyed.
Then, on Thursday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke at the United Nations. After a year of Mamdani pushing to arrest Netanyahu if he should come to NYC, he recently has to reverse that promise, acknowledging that he had no authority to carry out that threat. Meanwhile, Netanyahu took to the podium and essentially gloated that Mamdani couldn’t touch him.
Netanyahu accused Mamdani of being an anti-Semite who pals around with terrorists and terrorist supporters. He claimed Mamdani’s wife had expressed support for attacks against Israel, and his association with streamer Hassan Piker, summing it by saying, “Some friends you have.”
Netanyahu brazenly declared, “To all those that are spreading these lies about my country and about our brave soldiers, whether they sit in this hall or in the office of the anti-Semitic mayor of New York, I say this: Shame on you. Shame on you for distorting the facts,” no doubt referring to Mamdani and his followers.
Netanyahu reinforced what many have pointed out previously, that Israel has gone to extreme lengths to minimize civilian casualties in Gaza, while Hamas has purposely put those lives in danger, and that Israel has given support to the people in Gaza with food and medical assistance, highlighting the hypocrisy of Israel’s detractors who simultaneously ignore the many nations around the world actually committing awful human rights violations and intentional mass murder, focusing on the world’s only Jewish nation.
Mamdani stayed out of the public eye on Thursday, with his only response to call Netanyahu’s statements “baseless lies” without offering any specific rebuttal.
Basically, Mamdani spent the week getting schooled on national politics by Trump and eviscerated internationally by Netanyahu. After nine months of failing to deliver on any of his promises, Mamdani suffered a humiliating week that showed just how far in over his head he is once you look past the big smile and empty promises.
