Last week, I went down to Baltimore for the final 2 games of the Yankees Orioles series.
Yes, it was hot. Yes, the Yankees found ways to win.
There was a greater takeaway for me leaving Camden Yards in the wee hours of the morning on Friday.
I watched Pete Alonso in a jersey that wasn’t a Mets jersey for the first time in person.
It looked strange, it didn’t feel right and it still doesn’t make any sense to me.
How in the world did the Mets let Pete Alonso walk?
I know, I know. There will be 5 more years of Alonso to determine the proper synopsis of this move.
The Alonso detractor will wisely point that out and they will be right at the back end of the contract.
There is no way that Pete Alonso in year 5 or 6 of his current deal will produce the way he is producing right now.
No argument, but isn’t that the case for any long term contract that is signed?
The Mets went into 2026 trying to win a World Series.
The case for winning would have been enhanced by Pete Alonso being on the team.
He plays every day, he hits a ton of home runs and simply put.
Guys like Pete Alonso don’t grow on trees.
The Mets are learning that the hard way with the way the 1B position has played out so far this season.
A lot went wrong for the Mets in 2026.
Pete Alonso’s presence wouldn’t have changed everything.
However, he would’ve made the situation better.
There is no debating that, especially after watching the Mets offense for good chunks of this season.
2027 will bring about a lot more change to the Mets. There is much work to be done, but wouldn’t that work seem a little easier if Pete Alonso was back in the fold?
