The Mets can’t possibly make it… right?

The way the Mets have played since the trade deadline would make you think they’ve been contenders from the start… and to be fair, they were supposed to be exactly that.
With one of the worst records in the National League, the Mets sold off most of their valuable assets on August 3. Despite that, New York went on to sweep the Guardians in Cleveland, won two of three from the Pirates in Pittsburgh, and took the opening game in Atlanta against the NL East-leading Braves, also clinching the season series against their division rivals.
This team is completely indistinguishable from the one seen all season long. They’re scoring runs early and often, pitching well in key moments, and doing the little things that help win ballgames. New York has outscored opponents 50-32 in this run.
After Devin Williams hit the IL, no opening day reliever remained on the roster. Despite this, new arms stepped up, including Kodai Senga who picked up his first MLB save on Monday night in Atlanta.
There can’t possibly be a way for NY to sneak into the playoff picture, right? After all, the season “ended” about a month after it started.
Even after their recent hot stretch, New York boasts a measly 53-67 record. The Mets still sit 5th in the NL East and six teams sit between them and Philadelphia in the third and final Wild Card spot.
It’s extremely unlikely that New York can close that gap, but hey! Amazin’ things have happened before… they can certainly happen again.
