Nico Fernández Mercau scored the lone goal for New York City FC in their 1-1 draw against Toronto FC last Friday. His first half penalty shot was his 13th of the MLS season, drawing him level for the league’s goalscoring lead.
Former Chicago Fire striker Hugo Cuypers and FC Dallas frontman Petar Musa are the other two players in the league with 13 goals, though the former won’t be able to add to his total after completing a midseason transfer to Mexican club CF Monterrey.
Musa has a slight edge with two of his scores coming from the penalty spot to Fernández’s four, but there is plenty of time for Nico to add to his total, having scored in four consecutive league matches.
Before New York City heads into the last 16 games of the season they head to Harrison, NJ for Leagues Cup action. In the tri-nation tournament 18 Major League Soccer clubs will face off against 18 from Liga MX. New York City FC’s opponents will be Santos Laguna, reigning Mexican champions Cruz Azul, and Club Necaxa.
After the cup, NYC comes back home for a big match against the rival Philadelphia Union. They’re back at Yankee Stadium in early September before making their return to Citi Field to play the New England Revolution on Wednesday the 9.
