RANDALL’S ISLAND – Professional pickleball took center stage in New York City from June 25 through June 28, as Major League Pickleball brought four days of high-level competition to SPORTIME Randall’s Island.
Hosted by the Brooklyn Pickleball Team, the tournament welcomed 11 professional teams and some of the sport’s top players to New York. Fans packed the venue throughout the weekend, getting an up-close look at the fast-paced competition that has helped make pickleball one of the country’s fastest-growing sports.
For the hometown Brooklyn Pickleball Team, the defining moment of the weekend came on Sunday in a dramatic matchup against the Dallas Flash.
Brooklyn found itself on the verge of defeat after falling behind 20-10. With Dallas needing just one additional point to close out the match, Brooklyn mounted a comeback that will go down as one of the most memorable in Major League Pickleball history.
Fueled by the hometown crowd, Brooklyn rattled off 12 consecutive points to stun Dallas, 23-21.
The improbable victory provided a signature moment for a tournament that also represented an important milestone for the continued growth of professional pickleball in New York City.
For Brooklyn Pickleball Team COO Adam Behnke, bringing Major League Pickleball to New York was about more than the results on the court. It was also an opportunity to introduce more fans to the sport and strengthen the team’s connection with the city it represents.
The four-day tournament showcased the energy surrounding professional pickleball and New York’s growing appetite for the sport.
But when fans look back on MLP New York, one moment will stand above the rest: Brooklyn facing match point, trailing by 10, and delivering a historic 12-point run in front of its hometown crowd.
