St John’s soccer seasons off to a strong start

With decisive wins over the New Jersey Institute of Technology and St. Joseph’s University, and a draw against Columbia, the Red Storm women’s soccer team has gone undefeated in their first three contests of Fall 2021. Graduate forward Zsani Kajan (Hungary) has gotten off to an outstanding start to the season, registering 7 goals in the initial contests, recording a hat trick against St. Joe’s. Kajan’s leads the nation at time of press.
Women’s soccer faces Lehigh on Thursday at home at 7 pm and visits Harvard on Sunday.
Captain Brandon Knapp (Abingdon, Md.) had a goal and a pair of assists as men’s soccer collected their first win of the season in their home-opener against UAlbany on Monday night. Graduate transfer Lucas Bartlett (Overland Park, Kan.) scored late in the opening half and Wesley Leggett (Lawrence, NJ) added a tally early in the second to give SJU A 3-0 win. Leggett, a junior transfer from UConn, has scored four times in just nine career games with St. John’s.
Last week, Senior Anthony Herbert (Brooklyn) scored on a ball placed perfectly in the box by Einar Lye (Norway) to give the Red Storm an early 1-0 lead over nationally-ranked Clemson. St. John’s threatened Clemson’s 25-game home winning streak until the Tigers answered back with a goal in the 66th minute and one in the 77th minute. St. John’s earned a lucky break when Clemson was dealt a red card in the 85th minute, but the score held.
SJU Men’s Soccer hosts Marist on Saturday ahead of Monday’s Labor Day match with Fordham, the defending Atlantic-10 champs.
Fordham head coach Carlo Acquista is an alumni of St John’s, winning the NCAA tournament in the 1996 season.
