The parade begins at 7 p.m. outside of Maspeth Federal Savings (56-18 69th Street) and ends outside of New York Burger Diner (65-35 Grand Avenue).
The parade has been a much-anticipated festivity in Maspeth for nearly 20 years. Hundreds of local children march in the parade and the Lions are hoping for the same, if not better, turnout this year. Children of all ages are welcome to participate.
“I love the smiles on the kids’ faces,” said Mike LoCascio, president of the Maspeth Lions Club. At the end of the parade, each child is presented with a goody bag filled with candy and games for them to enjoy.
The Ragamuffin Parade is just one of many programs the Maspeth Lions host for kids throughout the year. LoCascio said one of his favorite events is the annual Christmas party at which the Lions give toys to children who normally would not otherwise have a Christmas celebration. Another important function of the club is that it purchases guide dogs for the blind.
The Maspeth Lions meet at O’Neill’s Restaurant (64-21 53rd Drive) the second and fourth Friday of every month at 7 p.m. For more information visit their website.
