York Men’s Basketball Picked to Finish First; Women Third in CUNYAC Pre-Season Coaches Poll

FLUSHING, NY— The CUNY Athletic Conference released its 2008-09 Pre-Season Coaches Poll Monday and the York College men’s basketball team was picked to finish first in the CUNYAC South Division. The Lady Cardinals were picked to come in third place.

The Cardinals edged out Brooklyn College in the voting. Both schools earned five first place votes apiece. Rounding out the South division in the poll was Staten Island, City Tech, and Medgar Evers College respectively.

In the North division, Baruch was picked to finish first despite having one fewer first place votes than defending champ John Jay College. Hunter College, Lehman College and CCNY rounded out the North division voting respectively.

On the women’s side Staten Island received nine first place votes in the South Division to earn the top spot. Brooklyn was picked to finish second, followed by York, Medgar Evers, and City Tech.

Lehman’s Sally Nnamani was named CUNYAC Pre-Season Player of the Year on the women’s side, while Brooklyn’s Richard Jean-Baptiste received the honor on the men’s side.

York finished last season with a school-record 22 wins and ended the regular season as the top team in the CUNYAC South Division with a 10-3 record. The Cardinals were upset in the championship game by sixth-seeded John Jay College.

The women’s team finished with an 8-17 record, 5-8 in the CUNYAC, and lost in the quarterfinals to Lehman College.
