Thanks to Moe Issa, owner of recently opened grocery store Brooklyn Fare, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel for the grocery shoppers of Downtown Brooklyn.
“Our top notch produce is what separates us from the rest,” said Issa. Locating his 7000 square foot store in the heart of Downtown Brooklyn at 200 Schermerhorn Street was a no-brainer for the Brooklyn native, who grew up in the area.
Before opening Brooklyn Fare in April of last year, Issa owned a Pepsi distribution franchise, which constantly had him running in and out of different supermarkets.
“I always felt I could do it better,” said Issa, who decided to take a chance and open up a supermarket of his own in an area that, as of late, has received attention from local leaders and community groups for its lack of fresh, affordable produce.
Issa financed a large part Brooklyn Fare himself. He said the down economy has had little effect on his business. On the contrary: with the construction of many nearby condos and apartment buildings complete, the population of the area surrounding Brooklyn Fare has been increasing, thereby broadening Issa’s potential customer base.
Brooklyn Fare’s main competition, according to Issa, is the nearby Trader Joe’s, whose prices he admits sometimes do indeed run lower.
But Issa is more than convinced that even though you might pay a little more at his store, the produce section at Brooklyn Fare is unmatched in the neighborhood.
“We’ve got some of the best apples and pears in Brooklyn,” said Issa, whose store offers both organic and inorganic produce, as well a large selection of prepared foods which he says were an instant hit with neighborhood residents.
Issa said he identifies with Downtown Brooklyn’s growing mix of younger, more affluent residents looking for fresh groceries at bargain prices. Issa said he’s also always shopping amongst distributors, looking for the best deals on the best goods to provide for his patrons.
“We’re a one stop shop” right now said Issa, a concept that has fared well so far with Brooklyn residents. “We’re still growing, one customer at a time.”
