Mayor Bill de Blasio is seriously considering running for governor, according to multiple news outlets that broke the story over the weekend.

Yes, he currently has the opportunity to take shots at Governor Andrew Cuomo, who has been a condescending nemesis over the year, while the governor is embroiled in multiple sexual harassment allegations and the potential cover-up of COVID-related nursing home deaths.

Still, the mayor should not forget that voters will most likely not be on his side if he decides to run.

It’s somewhat of a running joke that both Republicans and Democrats can find common ground in their contempt for de Blasio.

It would be hard enough for de Blasio to win over Democratic voters, as there are still party diehards that will support Cuomo regardless of the scandals.

On top of that, can you really imagine a scenario where de Blasio goes to upstate New York and sways more moderate Democratic voters to support him if he can barely please his Democratic base here in the five boroughs?

His potential run shouldn’t come as a shock though, as this is the same man who took a swing at becoming president, hitting the campaign trail while his constituents in New York were left wondering why they ever voted for him in the first place.

The city is excited about new voices in politics. Nothing shows that more than political outsider Andrew Yang charging ahead in polls as the frontrunner in the mayoral race, despite having no experience in New York politics.

You can also see that shift in the multiple progressive and young socialist candidates who won elections last year and are now sitting in the state legislature.

De Blasio can run for governor to inflate his own out-of-touch ego, but New Yorkers will continue to laugh at his incessant need to unintentionally make himself a joke.
