Jersey aids COVID relief

Days are ticking down ahead of Queensboro FC’s inaugural academy season in 2021, and the incoming USL club is continuing an early tradition of giving back to its community. QBFC has partnered with local healthcare heroes and hospitals to create the “By Our Heroes, For Our Heroes” Community Kit.

“They will be our game jerseys for 2021 and our academy will wear them with a lot of pride,” said Adam Behnke, QBFC’s Chief Business Officer. “They’ll be available in the team shop and in the local market to raise funds for our local hospitals.”

Proceeds from the jersey’s sales will benefit local hospitals and workers, with the kit co-designed by some of the borough’s frontline workers in the fight against COVID. The front of the jersey will feature NYU Langone’s logo, one of a handful of healthcare partners in the initiative.

The incoming USL club has already been involved with the community during a great time of need. The club has partnered with food pantries, raised awareness for COVID testing locations, and even donated PPE to hospitals in Queens.

QBFC isn’t alone in reaching out to their community. The USL, powered by tight connections to their local markets, have all stepped up in their hometowns, led by clubs like Oakland Roots SC, El Paso Locomotive, and future MLS club Sacramento Republic.

“We want to imitate and innovate here with some of those ideas and make them bigger and better for our community in Queens,” said Behnke. “A lot of us across different clubs are talking on a regular basis to understand some opportunities we may have as a league to do a larger community initiative.

“We’re going to continue all of these efforts into the new year,” he added. “The most important thing is our community. We take a lot of pride in being a force for good, and we want to continue that tradition in 2021.”

QBFC will get a taste of competitive action in the coming year. Recent tryouts attracted lots of local talent, with the club narrowing down the field to around 25 for the first season.

“We’re excited to put faces to the name of the club,” Behnke said. “It’ll be a great mix of local Queens talent and international talent being brought in. It’s coming together really nicely.

“We’re fortunate that Queens is the perfect market for soccer,” he continued. “It’s such a unique borough, with 2.3 million people that speak so many languages and represent so many cultures. It’s such an incredible place that already has soccer in its DNA.”
