He has been a player that has literally done it all for the Yankees. He comes to play everyday and does so at a very high level.
You want a guy who hits for a high average? He does. After all, DJ LeMahieu won the batting title last season and has won the award in both leagues.
You want a player who can defend at a high level at multiple positions? Check. LeMahieu is an excellent defender at second base and can handle third and first base at a pretty high level, as well.
But let's dig a little deeper.
On a Yankees team full of guys who strikeout, do you want somebody at the top of the order who is one of the toughest hitters to strike out in all of baseball?
Obviously, and that's why LeMahieu has been such a perfect fit for the Yankees.
He has been the best move as the Yankees have made for a non-star player since they acquired Paul O'Neill.
So, considering LeMahieu's perfect fit with the Yankees, why exactly he's still a free agent at this stage in the game?
It's been a frustrating couple of weeks for Yankees fans considering they know, just like I know, how important DJ LeMahieu is to this team's success.
A team with the budget and resources of the New York Yankees cannot let $25 million get in the way of bringing back their most valuable player over the last two years.
The Yankees cannot replace DJ LeMahieu.
The way he grinds out at bats, the way he delivers in the clutch, the way he sets the tone for the rest of the lineup.
I find it impossible the Yankees front office can sell their fans on the fact that this is a better team without him.
I hope that the Yankees are just playing the game of negotiation, and know full well the importance of LeMahieu to this team. They honestly can't be dumb enough to let him go, can they?
I sure hope not.
