At the time, Jets fans were euphoric. They believed they had their quarterback for the next decade to lead the franchise to bigger and better things.
Man, April of 2018 feels like a long, long time ago.
The hopes that I had along with many other Jets fans was that Darnold would solve the riddle of the quarterback position for the franchise.
Not only has he not solved that riddle, Sam Darnold's presence now reminds Jets fans of how it could've been different for their young quarterback.
Many of the questions surrounding the failures of Darnold over the last three years point to a lot of circumstances that were beyond his control.
It is certainly fair to wonder what Sam Darnold would have looked like as a New York Jet if he had better coaching, more talent and wasn't right in the middle of a dysfunctional mess.
It's reasonable to say that Sam Darnold's situation with the Jets could have been a lot more advantageous to his development as an NFL quarterback.
However, it's also fair to say that over the last three years the Jets have seen very little from the player that would give hope to upper management that he is the franchise game-changing quarterback they have been lacking.
Darnold has been unable to stay on the field for 16 games in any of his three seasons as a Jet.
Although there are factors that have not helped his situation, Darnold has simply not been good enough.
Too many mistakes, too many missed throws, and not enough improvement to warrant being the long-term solution at the position for the New York Jets.
Is it possible Sam Darnold could find success elsewhere? Of course, but that should not change the opinion of the Jet decision makers about the future and direction of this franchise.
If you have a chance to get Trevor Lawrence out of Clemson, you do it.
Perhaps with a different coaching staff and skilled position players, Sam Darnold can find that magic he had at USC just a few years ago.
After his Jets experience, the best thing for Darnold is to sit for a year in a good organization and watch a pro's pro handle their business.
For Sam Darnold's sake, he needs to escape the situation with the Jets and start new elsewhere.
I'm not ready to give up on Sam Darnold the NFL Quarterback, but I am ready to give up on Sam Darnold the New York Jet.
