A large group of Maspeth residents, community organizations and elected officials took part in a community cleanup effort on October 24.

The volunteers cleaned up in and around three neighborhood parks: Frontera Park, Reiff Park and Maurice Park.

“The response was tremendous,” said Maureen Tompkins, who organized the event. “People in the streets asked to help next time.”

D’Avanzo & Sons Construction picked up full garbage bags throughout the day. The Department of Sanitation also donated tools and supplies.

Our Lady of Hope, Maspeth Lions Club, Boy Scouts of America, St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Academy, Maspeth High School and Monsignor McClancy Memorial High School all sent volunteers.

Assemblyman Brian Barnwell, Daniel Kurzyna from Councilman Robert Holden’s office, and a representative from State Senator Joseph Addabbo’s office also attended.

“This was a wonderful opportunity to come together to do something positive,” Tompkins said.
