Obviously, Mr. Joseph Manago’s comments in his “Cut rent in half” dispatch were not thought through with any sense.
The rents paid by tenants don’t even come close to what the landlord needs to keep the tenant in his apartment: mortgage payments, real estate taxes, insurance, water, utilities and so on.
Now, if Mr. Manago also calls for the landlord’s responsibilities to be cut in half, now we’re talking. The landlord cannot and should not be forced to absorb all the expenses without similar compensation.
If a tenant is delinquent a landlord can evict him; if a homeowner doesn’t pay his mortgage or real estate taxes or insurance, a lien will be placed on his house and he may lose it.
Would Mr. Manago agree that it would only be fair that landlord be afforded the same benefit as the tenant? What he is proposing is nonsense!
