English only

Dear Editor,

Regarding your August 22nd opinion piece, "Public charge rule hurts NYC immigrants," President Donald Trump's proposed expansion of the "public charge" rule will force legal immigrants to chose between applying for green cards or collecting public benefits.

But there's a better way to get immigrants off the dole. Trump can declare English to be our nation's official language and direct all federal agencies and local agencies getting federal funds to conduct business only in English.

This means immigrants must learn English in order to receive food stamps, rent subsidies, Medicare coverage and other benefits. Thirty-one states now have "English-only" laws, et's extend that to the entire country.

Motivating immigrants to learn English will make them more employable and less needy, help them assimilate, and bolster their chances for citizenship because demonstrating English proficiency is a requirement to become a naturalized American citizen.

Sincerely,

Richard Reif
