Becoming a “man of the cloth” is a calling few will heed. Any priest will tell you they felt chosen; it wasn’t a decision they made on their own.

They will tell you it is a gift to spread the word of God. It includes sacrifice, giving to others and finding faith.

Although the number enrolled in a seminary (about 3,500) has not changed much since 1985, the number of priests has.

There are about 25,000 priests in the United States, and about 500 are ordained each year.

Of those, 99.9 percent bring joy, reverence and promote forgiveness to their parishioners.

They deserve a hug. Why?

Because you don’t let the few define the many, because they need and have earned our support, and because of their personal sacrifice.

Helping others deserves to lift them to a place in society where they should be honored and thanked, because they follow a path that heals the soul.

How many of us can say we do that on a daily bases?

So if you see your neighborhood priest on the street, give them a hug.
