A progressive blue wave is sweeping the country, and it’s coming right through the heart of the insurgency in New York City.

After Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s stunning victory of Joe Crowley in June, political observers were shocked to find out just how much voters wanted change. This election cycle, a crop of talented, young and smart insurgent candidates are going after longtime, machine-backed incumbents, and with good reason.

Voters are tired of the status quo, of politicians making backroom deals and taking contributions from powerful industry lobbies. They’re yearning for a fresh face, representatives who not only know the community, but come with a different attitude about politics.

Albany is the center of corruption. Politicians and aides from both parties have been involved in scandals, and that needs to change.

The IDC was hardly a scandal. It was a political ploy for power that lasted longer than it should have.

Jose Peralta, by all accounts, is a hardworking and decent legislator. He represented his community well, first as an assemblyman and now as a state senator.

But his choice to leave the ranks of the Democratic Conference to join the IDC was perplexing, especially to community members who had backed him for so many years.

His constituents, particularly in Jackson Heights, felt betrayed. They vented their anger at a town hall, rallied constantly and started the No IDC movement.

They quickly coalesced around Jessica Ramos, a former community board member, district leader and aide to Mayor de Blasio. Unapologetically progressive, she embodies not only the insurgent energy that is at the heart of her neighborhood in Jackson Heights, but also the government experience and political relationships to get the job done.

She’s by no means an outsider like Ocasio-Cortez. But Ramos is also not a foot soldier of the old Queens machine, the same one that was taken down just months ago.

Ramos will bring new ideas, a passion for service and unyielding love for her community to Albany. Perhaps more importantly, she will help change the culture in Albany that emodies a lack of transparency and accountability.

Peralta has served the 13th Senate District honorably in the last two decades. He championed causes that were important to his community, and brought back crucial funding to community organizations, schools and local groups.

But it’s time for a new voice in the State Senate. That’s why we’re endorsing the challenger in this race.

On September 13, we say vote for Jessica Ramos.
