George O’Neill, a pillar of the Maspeth community as the longtime owner of O’Neill's Restaurant on 65th Place at 53rd Drive, passed away early this evening following a short illness.

He returned to New York from his home in Florida this month and was hospitalized last week.

O’Neill's first opened in 1933, and was known for its philanthropic activities. The restaurant hosted numerous fundraisers, including raising money for St. Jude Children's Hospital.

Every Christmas, O'Neill hosted a holiday party for the NYPD Honor Legion, which is dedicated to children and family members who lost a loved one in the line of duty.

Following a fire in May of 2011, O’Neill's rebuilt, and recently received support from the community to expand with a second-floor catering hall.

A wake will be held at Papavero Funeral Home at 72-27 Grand Avenue in Maspeth on Saturday, July 21, from 5 to 8 p.m., and Sunday, July 22, from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at Transfiguration Roman Catholic Church at 61-14 Clinton Avenue in Maspeth at 10:30 a.m. on July 23.
