Knights end year with three wins

The Queens College women’s basketball team survived a staunch test from a conference opponent, knocking off UDC by a final score of 72-68 on Saturday to close out the 2017 calendar year on a three-game winning streak.

With the win, Queens College improves to 6-4 on the season and is an unblemished 2-0 in East Coast Conference play. UDC drops to 2-10 overall and 0-3 in conference competition.

Merrick Rowland led all players with 19 points, and she is now 14 shy of hitting the 1,000-point plateau for her career. Taliyah Hopkins had 17 points off the bench and was 9-of-12 from the free throw line in the victory.

Maria Ramon Lopez collected a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds while Beth Bonin added 13 points, five boards and four assists. Lucy Tougas added six points and Dah’Vielle Lucas ripped down eight rebounds in twelve minutes of playing time.

Queens shot 40% (22-55) from the field in the win and held UDC to just 35% from the field as the Firebirds went 26-or-74 from the field and 4-of-17 from three-point territory.

The Knights were frequent visitors to the charity stripe, hitting 22-of-28 attempts.

The Knights were set to open the 2018 calendar year at home with a Wednesday night tilt against NYIT at 5:30 p.m.
