For Michael Capiraso, president and CEO of the New York Road Runners, inspiring people to run is an important mission.

The organization hosts races throughout the five boroughs nearly every weekend. They’re most known for organizing the TCS New York City Marathon, which this year will take place on November 5.

But Capiraso is also focused on making sure children are staying active. The Road Runners have involved more than 200,000 kids in their free programs.

“It’s really important to us that we’re able to provide kids who are in our free programs in the schools with opportunities to be outside and have some fun,” he said.

Their programs help support a student in their school day, he said. It’s important for them to be inside the classroom and learning, but being outside for fitness helps them learn.

“It gives them a break, it gives them some extra energy,” he said. “It helps them get some of that nervousness out.

“Our programs are designed to help them learn about physical fitness and have some fun along the way,” he added.

The Road Runners recently helped open a new playground at PS 120, equipped with a turf field, running track and other play equipment.

“Seeing a place here for people to come out and run gets us really excited,” he said. “I see all the smiling faces, and there isn’t anything that makes us happier than this.”

Capiraso said they have programs for people of all ages and abilities. They have open, free runs in 13 parks around the city. The Road Runners also have a “Striders” program for seniors to stay moving.

“We’re just giving people opportunities at every turn to run,” he said.
