For eight years, local residents have advocated for a transformation of the Flushing Avenue Triangle between 59th Street and 59th Avenue, which over the years gradually became a parking lot for auto repair shops.
The state-owned property is in the middle of an industrial area with little green space. Local elected officials worked with community members and state agencies, and succeeded in getting the state Department of Transportation (DOT) to beautify the site.
“I’m thrilled DOT will be moving forward with this beautification project,” Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley said. “Just a little green space can go a long way.”
The triangle will soon be landscaped with trees and a new, five-foot fence around the property surrounded by a gate, new sidewalks and planting. They expect to begin work during the upcoming planting season, which runs from October 1 to December 15.
