Last Sunday, Café Istanbul opened its doors for the first time at 25-47 Steinway Street in Astoria. The opening coincided with Turkish National Day and the restaurant certainly celebrated with a Turkish feast.

Café Istanbul serves Egyptian, Mediterranean and Turkish cuisine prepared by Egyptian-born Chef Fathi. Some of Fathi’s signature dishes includes Istanbul shepherd salad with feta, tabouli, baba ghanoush, rabbit, tagin lamb, gourmet squab, rack of lamb and swai fish.

Hookah is also a centerpiece at the restaurant with over 30 flavors including mango, strawberry, orange and pomegranate. For entertainment, belly dancers perform every weekend starting at 11:30 p.m.

Sonny Shaikh, Café Istanbul’s owner, said his mother inspired her children to cook. Originally from Bombay, India, Shaikh has been cooking since he was 15 years old. After arriving to the United States 23 years ago, Shaikh worked in the restaurant industry. Opening Café Istanbul has allowed him to realize his long-held dream, Shaikh said.
