Dear Editor,

Edward Riecks is absolutely right (“Not just the GOP” - 5/19/16), Clinton did say "we're going to put coal miners and coal companies out of business." But it was not a lie when she said "she is their friend and if elected will fight for them."

She went on to say the government has to invest in clean, renewable energy to bring jobs back. “Now we’ve got to move away from coal, and all the other fossil fuels, but I don’t want to move away from the people who did they best they could to produce the energy that we relied on,” she said.

Clinton has a $30 billion plan to retrain coal workers that covers everything from education and infrastructure to tax credits and school funding. What are the specifics of Trump's plan to put coal miners back to work?

The coal industry is imploding. Peabody Energy, Arch Coal, Alpha Natural Resources, and Patriot Coal have filed for bankruptcy in recent months, hurt not only by cleaner competition but also because of the industry’s own mistakes.

The decline in coal jobs has been a decades-long trend. In 1985, the industry employed 177,000 people, by the end of 2008 that number had whittled to just 86,000. Now it’s just 56,000.

As for people "being as stupid as we think they are,” Those people are called "Trump Supporters."

Sincerely,

Robert LaRosa

Whitestone
