Former performers include Rihanna, Backstreet Boys, Jason Derulo, Ariana Grande and Demi Lovato among others. Similarly, this year’s lineup also consisted of young up-and-comers such as Bea Miller, who rose to fame on ‘The X Factor’ with Simon Cowell, and Jacob Whitestone, who was named an “Artist to Watch” by MTV in August. American Authors, the Brooklyn based band behind the hit song ‘Best Day of My Life,’ brought their optimistic alternative rock to the stage while the hip hop duo Kalin and Myles returned for the second consecutive year.
The concert’s most well-known performer, Natalie La Rose, happens to have one of the most played songs of the summer. Her hit single, ‘Somebody,’ featuring singer Jeremih, peaked at number three on the Billboard Top 40 list. For the 27-year-old, getting a chance to perform during Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day was exhilarating.
“Sometimes when I’m thinking about what I’m doing here it seems both cool and it still makes me a bit nervous, but I haven’t had much time to just sit and soak it all in yet,” La Rose said.
She’s a fan of tennis and actually has a few family members who are so good at the sport that travel and take part in tournaments. Seeing her family members be active and enjoy the sport is one of the reasons why she wanted to take part in the festivities.
“I think it’s a great thing that the U.S. Open involve kids,” she said, as fans screamed her name from the crowd. “This is a huge event, and to let kids be acquainted with the sport through games and entertainment, I think that’s a beautiful combination to get them started.”
The Dutch singer, now based in Miami as she tries to climb the music charts, was also excited to see the rest of the performances. One performer in particular was Miller, who she had an opportunity to tour with this summer. Along with Miller and the girl band Fifth Harmony, La Rose traveled for two months, performing in a different city almost every day.
Taking part of the U.S. Open festivities has been the icing on the cake.
“It’s been an honor to be asked to do this,” she said.
