For Kew Gardens native Lynne R. Roth, recently named as senior vice president for development at Columbia University Medical Center, her first day on July 1 will be a homecoming of sorts.

Roth began her career in medical fundraising in Columbia some 14 years ago, working as a key member of the Columbia University Health Sciences development team.

“I’m really excited about it,” she said. “It feels comfortable to be coming back. I know a lot of the physicians and key players from my days at Columbia.

Currently vice president of philanthropy at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, Roth said she was eager to return to the offices where she’d gotten her start after graduating from Barnard College, even if she expected the experience to be a little odd.

“My office is in the same place,” she said. “It’s a bit surreal.”

Roth said that after getting settled, she wanted to focus on a few key projects, including the center’s new 14-story Medical and Graduate Education Building, currently under construction on Haven Avenue.

For now, she said, she was busy acquainting herself with her new job, even if some things about the position haven’t changed.

“It’s a gorgeous view,” she said of the Medical Center’s offices. “You start to take it for granted, but coming back 14 years later, it’s breathtaking.”
