Using pink basketballs purchased for the tournament, the young athletes thrilled parents and spectators for a good cause.
The two-day tournament was part of an ongoing partnership between the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) and the charity that began last year. Events this year will culminate at the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic College basketball Invitational at Brooklyn’s Barclay’s Center featuring Duke vs. Temple and Stanford vs. UNLV on November 21 and 22.
At that tournament, select CYO teams will have the opportunity to play on the hardwood before thousands of hoops fans. Currently, St. Stan’s of Ozone Park and St. Thomas in Brooklyn are slated for one of the games, and spots are still open for the second.
Over 300 students from second through eighth grade took part this past weekend, according to Rob Caldera, who ran the tournament with help from Lou Pagnatta and his staff from the host parish.
In addition to the games, volunteers held a bake sale, ran a 50/50, and raffled off a PlayStation 4 for the cause.
