We need a hero

Dear Editor:

I am a 73-year-old veteran of the Vietnam War, and except for my time in the military I have lived in New York.

I was born in the Bronx, lived in Brooklyn for six months, and in Flushing for the last 34 years. I was a child of the 40s, a teenager of the 50s, and grew up with many heroes to look up to. We had Joe Dimaggio, Duke Snider, Hank Aaron, Frank Gifford, John Wayne, Dwight Eisenhower, our school teachers, and the neighborhood police officers, just to name a few.

Today, our sports figures for the most part aren't the good guys like my generation. In the music world, female singers are more interested in showing boobs and butts to the public, and male role models include Kayne West, Chris Brown, and Justin Bieber.

Come on, who our children and grandchildren going to emulate? The Kardashians?

To survive as the “Land Of The Free” we need change. The best of our young people are off fighting to protect our freedoms. America needs real heroes again.

Sincerely,

Paul Narson

Flushing
