Against Convention

Dear Editor:

The United States Constitution has endured for more than two centuries, securing the blessings of liberty for all Americans. There are people now who seek to radically alter the Constitution under the guise of amending it.

They want to change it by invoking an Article V convention for proposing amendments

otherwise known as a Constitutional Convention. If an Article V convention were held, there would be no limit as to what changes could be made to our

Constitution, as shown by the first convention held in 1787.

This was held for the sole purpose of revising the Articles of Confederation. The delegates chose to replace the Articles with our present Constitution. Fortunately, they wrote a marvelous document.

They were men of high moral character, quite different than those that we have today.

James Madison stated after the first convention in 1787,"Having witnessed the difficulties and dangers experienced by the first convention, I should tremble to think for the result of a second."

Also, if we cannot abide by our present Constitution, why should we obey a second one?

Sincerely,

Janet McCarthy
