On September 9, registered Democratic Party voters in the 11th Senatorial District will choose between incumbent Tony Avella and former comptroller John Liu as their candidate for State Senate in the November 4th general election.
Whenever there is a choice like this, I always ask myself, 'does the incumbent deserve to be fired in favor of the insurgent?' In this case, I believe the answer to be a resounding no!
Although I know and respect John Liu, I feel that Tony Avella has worked hard over the years for our communities and deserves to be retained as our state senator. When he was our City Council member, Avella pushed for and succeeded in rezoning the vast majority of our area.
As state senator, he still advocates for the protection of our communities and landmarking of historic buildings and districts where appropriate.
In his role of State Senator, he has spoken out on and acted upon a wide variety of issues. As a civic person, I have met with the senator and his staff at his office to discuss community problems and issues. He brings in the businesses that we have concerns with and acts as a mediator to resolve problems to everyone’s satisfaction.
For all of these reasons and many others, I will vote for Senator Avella on September 9 and I urge my fellow Democrats to do the same.
I would like to point out that the opinions expressed in this letter are my own. The community organizations that I belong to, including my civic association, do not endorse candidates for political office.
