David Chestnut: Baruch College Baseball

This week’s Athlete of the Week is Baruch junior David Chestnut, the star of the CUNY Baseball tournament.

Chestnut, a Brooklyn native, was dominant on the mound, tossing a complete game five-hitter to win the opening game of the tournament, 9-1, over Mitchell on Thursday. At the plate, he batted 4-11 with two runs and two RBI.

Chestnut, a versatile player who can pitch and play in the infield and outfield, led Baruch in wins this season with a 5-2 record along with a 2.36 ERA and a 43 strikeouts. As a hitter, Chestnut hit a mind-boggling .400 and knocked in 32 RBI.

Perhaps most impressive is Chestnut’s turnaround from last season, when he went 0-7 with a 6.29 ERA. The improvement caught the eye of his assistant coach, Tom Santino, who raved about Chesnut, saying: “David Chestnut is a special kid. He was very upset after last year, and he came out obsessed with winning and being apart of something special and being the heart and soul of the team. It’s a testament to him that he’s the MVP of the playoffs. He’s truly a leader.”

We couldn’t have said it any better ourselves. Congratulations to this week’s Athlete of the Week, David Chestnut.
