Rob Astorino has to first show me the money before "We've got a governor's race here!" (Pol Position - July 31).
Governor Andrew Cuomo has been running $161 million in feel-good ads promoting "I Love New York," The New New York" and "Start-Up New York” sponsored by the Empire State Development Corporation at taxpayers expense.
Cuomo's own campaign is spending millions to define Andrew in a positive light. The Democratic Party State Committee is spending millions to define Astorino in a negative light as an "extreme conservative, anti-woman pro-political patronage" before he can introduce himself to voters.
Astorino needs $10 million or more to fund a $1 million per week media buy between Labor Day and Election Day. Without it, Astorino will be unable to get his message directly to the voters.
Meanwhile, Cuomo will remain in the witness protection program, hiding from both the media and Astorino. In the end, Cuomo will agree to one or two token debates. For Astorino, this will be too late to make any impact.
Sadly, it continues to be a 100 percent safe bet Cuomo will still win. Despite enlightened reporting by major media outlets surrounding the governor's premature ending of the Moreland Commission, using $40 million in Sandy Relief funds to pay for feel-good ads, and other scandals, voters are not paying attention.
Watch how newspaper editorial boards critical of Cuomo today, including the New York Times, will forget his transgressions and endorse him come November.
