The organizers of this Sunday's Maspeth Memorial Day Parade have announced that Karen Burke and Leonard Masone will be this year's grand marshals.

Burke was born and raised in Maspeth. she attended St. Adalberts Elementary School in Elmhurst, while her high school years were spent at Christ the King Regional H.S. in Middle Village.

After graduating from high school, Burke started her banking career in 1983 at Maspeth Federal Savings as a teller before being promoted to the Credit Department, where she worked until 1993 when she left to raise her second child.

In 1995, Burke returned to working part-time in the Mortgage Origination Department until 2002, when she was offered a full-time position as secretary to Thomas Rudzewick, executive vice president and chief lending officer of the department.

In 2010, she was promoted to assistant vice president, where she continues her work with the organization on free summer concerts and Smile on Maspeth Day, as well as coordinating the Maspeth Memorial Day Parade.

In 1986, she married her husband Dave and the couple started their family in Middle Village, which includes two children, Justin and Stephanie. She has been involved with the United Veterans & Fraternal Organization of Maspeth since 2002, serving as corresponding secretary, and enjoys volunteering at Martin Luther School, where both of her children attended.

Masone was born and raised in Maspeth. He received his education at Archbishop Molloy High School and Villanova University. He earned his law degree from Saint John’s University, where he graduated with honors and was associate editor of the Law Review.

He has practiced law in Maspeth for 40 years with the firm of Masone, White, Penkava & Cristofari. Masone is married to Elizabeth, his wife of more than 40 years, and has three daughters, Carol, Lisa and Michelle, all of whom work with him at the law office.

He is a member of the American Bar Association, New York State Bar Association and Queens County Bar Association, where he served on the Grievance Committee and continues to serve as a mentor for newly admitted attorneys. He is also a member and past president of the Blackstone Lawyers Club of Ridgewood.

Masone is very active in community affairs. He is an active member and a past president of the Maspeth Kiwanis Club and is currently president of the Maspeth Kiwanis Foundation. As chairman of the Maspeth Kiwanis Scholarship Committee for 34 years, he has overseen the distribution of nearly $500,000 in scholarship money to high school seniors residing in Maspeth and surrounding neighborhoods.

He has also served on the Board of Maspeth Town Hall for over 30 years, serving as president for nine of those years, during which time the building was completely renovated. Masone is also proud to have served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Maspeth Federal Savings Bank and Loan Association for over 40 years.
