Some championships are won by sheer domination of your opponents; others are won by executing well defensively and offensively and by having a shot roll in rather than out. Sacred Heart Sub-Novice boys chose the latter en route to a thrilling 15-14 win over St. Margaret’s in the Sacred Heart Spring League Championship.

The SH Spring League consisted of 6 teams playing a 10-game season after the regular CYO season ended. Sacred Heart was joined by St. Margaret’s, Our Lady of Mercy, Our Lady of Hope, St. Stan’s and St. Adalbert’s. The 10-game season saw all teams playing in highly competitive games, played under next year’s Pee-Wee (4th grade) rules.

At the end of the regular season, the top 4 teams competed in the semi-final playoff match-ups. Sacred Heart, paired against Our Lady of Hope, hung on for an 11-9 win and played St. Margaret’s in the championship game.

The teams, having split their two regular season games, knew a close game was at hand. However, led by point guard Chris Tracy, whose precision on the court seemed like that of a surgeon, Sacred Heart shockingly jumped off to an 8-0 lead. Leading the scoring attack was Joe Fragala, who poured in 6 of his game high 8 points in the first half. Andrew Fox (4 points) crossed over and scored on a nifty lay-up to complete the first half scoring.

The first half defense and rebounding for Sacred Heart was exceptional, led by Joe Pullara, Matthew Autz, Michael Smith, Michael Anello, Rachid Sassine, Corey Lides, and Daniel Vilardi. Time after time, Sacred Heart guards were able to take chances defensively knowing they had Autz’s large arms to protect them should their man slip by...and Autz did just that, swatting away many shots and grabbing every rebound within a three block radius it seemed.

Not to be outdone, Owen Motherway led a ferocious St. Margaret’s comeback, scoring all 10 of his points in the second half.

The game was 15-14 with only a few seconds left when a St. Margaret’s player shot at the buzzer, only to have the ball fall out...that close to a win, just as close to a loss. The difference between these two teams was just the roll of the ball on this night.

Owen Motherway was named all-star for St. Margaret’s while Andrew Fox received the award for Sacred Heart. The Most Valuable Player award was given to Matthew Autz, not only for his 3 points but more importantly his impressive defense and court presence throughout the playoffs.

Congratulations to the entire Sacred Heart team, including coaches Joe Maurello and assistant coach Al Braco.

We would like to thank all the teams who played as we had zero arguments with parents, referees, players, or coaches...basketball like it oughta be!
