Abrupt screams of anguish and frustration reverberated through the interpretive performance in part one of Green’s three-part recital entitled “Skimming the Surface: Fragments of Collective Unconscious,” a dark look into the inner turmoil of trauma and emotional wounds.
Dancers in the performance laced the stage with tightly choreographed sequences and played to the room of nearly 200 at each of their two shows over the weekend.
“There were different emotions of someone who has gone through a trauma, go through a whole cycle of emotions and different characters emerge,” Green said of the performance following a dress rehearsal on Fri., Feb. 21.
Originally from Cleveland, Green has taught, performed and created her unique and highly interpretive dance style in New York City for the last 18 years. The performance last week was just one of more than 30 feature performances she has produced since she first came to the city.
Under a dim red light, Green presented her own piece entitled, “Womb,” to the backdrop of a multimedia component, displaying an interpretation of life in utero.
“I had a movement modality and I had images as if I was in a womb,” Green said, “and suddenly I had this whole idea of this piece come into my head with the video and different layers simultaneous with the live component.”
Green said this particular performance was just a little different than other multimedia displays, however she was pleased with the way her vision was brought to the stage.
In the final segment of three pieces, called “Hinge,” Green called on the work of the Multicultural Sonic Evolution (MuSE) to perform original music designed for the free-spirited dance number finale.
“This last piece was also a very special piece because of the collaboration with the music that was original for this piece” she explained of her work with musical director Yui Kitamara. “You don’t get to see a lot of live music on the stage with dance, so it has really become a special treat to have this kind of live performance.”
