Godlight Theatre Company director Joe Tantalo is presenting the world premier of his production of the legendary story about Randle Patrick McMurphy and the revolutionary social experiment at the psychiatric ward against Nurse Ratched.
“I’ve always been a fan of ‘One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest,’” Tantalo said. “I grew up on the movie, and I know the movie and the book has some profound differences, but the movie had a profound impact on me.”
Tantalo and the Godlight Theatre Company will present the story in front of a 20-by-20-foot white square box on the center of the large stage at Kingsborough, located at 2001 Oriental Blvd., in Manhattan Beach.
“Metaphorically, they’re stuck on the island of their mind,” he explained. “I think that it might be an interesting way to look at the story because we’re not giving an interior set. It’s all very open and exposed.”
The play has a cast of 14, and many of which have worked with Tantalo for the last seven to 10 years.
Anna Becker, the executive director of On Stage at Kingsborough, said she is looking forward to the performance and cannot wait to see how it goes over with the audience.
“He really is an extraordinary director,” Becker said about Tantalo’s work. “The way that he does it, it’s so very clear and striking, and it’s not at all obscure or avant-garde.”
Godlight Theater Company was supposed to bring the performance to On Stage at Kingsborough last year, however they were forced to reschedule after Sandy put the school underwater.
“I was anxious to get him here as soon as we could,” she said. “We are honored that they will be bringing the 20th Century novel to life at our theater.”
Godlight Theatre is planning on an adaptation of James Dickey’s novel Deliverance sometime next year.
