The culinary event Smorgasburg will take place every Sunday from October 6 to November 24 in Brooklyn Bridge Park this fall.

Originally scheduled to take place at the Tobacco Warehouse in DUMBO, Smorgasburg was moved this year to a vacant lot on the edge of the up-and-coming Pier 5 section of the park. A change of venue that, while taking away from some of the aesthetic of the event, was something much appreciated by the residents of Brooklyn Heights, who made up a large portion of the crowd on Sunday.

A representative of Brooklyn Flea, the group behind Smorgasburg, said that the reason the series wasn't being held at its usual location was due to planned construction at the Tobacco Warehouse.

While lacking in fancy dining tables and thoughtful landscaping, the diners who gathered for the culinary series were all too happy to seat themselves on forklift pallets that were piled throughout the grounds. Among those in attendance were Brett Peiser, Emmy McIntyre and Peiser's two sons, Jack and Nicholas.

“We were upstairs and [Jack] already had a pizza this morning so we decided to come back for a second,” said Peiser. “He also came down for the pineapple lichee hibiscus bubble tea.”

The pizza that was good enough to bring them back was crafted by Pizza Moto and cooked in one of their many mobile wood-fire ovens, which are designed and manufactured by Moto chef Dave Sclarow.

Nicholas was enjoying an orange lemonade and both Brett and Emmy ate Dandan Noodles. Peiser said that he plans to bring the family to Smorgasburg every Sunday until the end of November.

Daniel and Laura Edgerton of Brooklyn Heights were joined by their friend Nicholas Capella from Fort Greene. “We were driving by here earlier on the BQE and we saw that it was down here,” said Laura. “This is much closer to our apartment.”

“It's like a five-minute walk from where we live,” added Daniel, who said that while he does enjoy the greenery of the northern areas of Brooklyn Bridge Park, “I like this because it's closer.”

For her fill, Laura tried chicken and waffles from Crazy Legs and the triple pork Bolivian Street Sandwich from Bolivian Llama Party.

“They gave us a free sample,” said Daniel, with Laura finishing his thought by saying, “Sold.” She also added, “It's the perfect hangover food.”

Tiffany Bal and Antoine Thomas came into DUMBO from the further reaches of Brooklyn to enjoy the culinary offerings of Smorgasburg after reading about the event online.

Together they feasted on foods from several vendors, including pulled pork from the Brisket, lumpia from Lumpia Shack, and pupusas from Solber. However, their favorite treat came from ChedBread, a food stand that they visited twice on Sunday.

“You need to have the honey sea salt ChedBread,” said Bal. “That will change your life. I promise, it's that good.”

While Bal and Thomas were talking about their experience at ChedBread, another diner who was sitting nearby overheard the talk and asked if they would recommend the honey sea salt cornbread for his next tasting.

“Go get that right now,” said Thomas. “I'm serious.”
