The Greenpoint YMCA hosted its annual Spirit Day, where parents are invited to visit watch kids in the summer camp program perform.

The campers dressed in costumes and put on skits and musical performances

As each group performed the other kids would hold up small sign with words of encouragement. At the end, awards were presented in categories like “Most Creative Costume” and “Best Showmanship.”

“It's such an event for the kids and their families, we need more places like this” said Assemblyman Joseph Lentol, who has been attending the event for the past 10 years. “The staff at the Y work very hard to make sure the kids are having fun and feel welcome.”

The staff tries to teach the kids, as well, and keeps education as a main part of each day.

“It’s about teaching the kids,” said Executive Director Keith Hicks. “Spirit day is a fun day for the kids to be able to show off what they’ve done and learned all summer long.”
