The 31st annual Mermaid Parade almost didn't take place this year.

In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, funds had to be raised to hold the event, and the response to a Kickstarter campaign that raised more than $100,000 proved the community's love for the event.

On Saturday, thousands of people in lavish costumes descended on Coney Island. This year’s ceremonial “King Neptune” was 30 Rock actor Judah Friedlander and his “Queen Mermaid” was journalist and “Real Housewives of New York City” star Carole Radziwill.
