While there is always a lot of activity in McCarren Park, nearby McGolrick Park in Greenpoint is a little more hidden and perhaps slightly overlooked when it comes to summer events in the active community of North Brooklyn.

This year, Town Square, the Open Space Alliance for North Brooklyn (OSA) and the Friends of McGolrick Park are joining forces with some local businesses to breath a little life into the green space with the program SummerStarz in McGolrick Park.

The groups have partnered with Hosh Yoga and Creative Arts and Music Programs (CAMP) Productions this year to bring a little diversity to their usual film screenings.

“Town Square is thrilled to expand our SummerStarz program to other parks,” said Susan Anderson, chairperson for Town Square, a nonprofit community group in North Brooklyn. “We are looking to organize a summer full of activities for the whole family.”

This year the group will introduce live music to the park on Monitor Street between Nassau and Driggs Avenues, with family friendly bands like Shapiro’s Shanty Shakedown, Maracatu NY, and The Mad Town Special.

Hosh Yoga Studio, located at 55 Nassau Ave., will also set up several times throughout the summer to host yoga classes for kids and adults.

In previous years, the program was held in East River State Park and McCarren Park, and Anderson said they are open to expanding to other parks throughout the borough as well.

Friends of McGolrick Park co-chair Jessica Glorieux says she is happy to see some activity for the families coming to her part of the neighborhood.

“In the recent past of the park there has been a lot of vandalism,” Glorieux said.

First purchased by Brooklyn in 1889 for $132,825, Glorieux said she is hopeful that projects like SummerStarz will bring some needed attention to McGolrick Park.

“It’s a little off the beaten path, but it’s a beautiful park with characteristics that the other parks just don’t have,” Glorieux said. “We care about the park and we are working with the powers that be to make sure things stay that way.”
