Elmhurst Hospital and Healthfirst held their 4th Annual Cinco De Mayo festival on Friday, May 3, with music, face painting and numerous informational workshops for the community to learn about available health services.

Nemesio Ortiz, vice president of Medicare sales at Healthfirst, said the celebration was a way to spread the knowledge of their services to the community.

“This lets the community know that Healthfirst is working in partnership with Elmhurst Hospital to render services in Queens,” Ortiz said. “Currently, we have 200,000 Hispanics that reside in Queens that are members with Healthfirst, so this is our way of celebrating with them.”

The Hispanic Federation, Elmhurst Jackson Heights Senior Center, Ecuadorian International Center, FDNY, Costco, Department of Labor and Girl Scouts were just a few of the organizations on hand.

Healthfirst’s 2012 Nassau Youth Singing award winner, 11-year-old Krisia Romano, performed several songs with her brother Khristian at the festival’s main stage.

“Since we were little, we always liked to hear music,” Romano said. “I just want to make the audience get happy.”

Romano and her brother have been performing together for the last three years, and together they performed some of their favorites, including; “Tù Solo Tù,” “La De La Mochila” and “Aźul.”

Tanya Whittmore, community affairs site developer with Healthfirst, was presented with a citation for the program from the office of Councilwoman Julissa Ferreras.

“It goes to show that we have a great partnership with the councilwoman’s office and it also shows that we are doing things to give back in the community,” Whittmore said. “We not only want to make sure people have health insurance, but we also want to make sure that they’re healthy.”
