Members of the community and parish took part in the procession that snaked through the streets of the neighborhood just after 7 p.m. on Friday.
Parishioners carried a statue of a fallen Jesus Christ in a box to symbolize bringing him to the tomb in which he was buried. A statue of the Virgin Mary was closely behind, dressed in black in the mourning of her son.
The statues have been used in the procession for 60 years, and were recently restored.
A cross illuminated by red lights led women praying in Italian as darkness fell. The parish has a rich history in the Italian community. Immigrants from Italy founded the church in 1882.
“I’ve been living here my whole life,” said one resident backpedaling through the crowd, snapping pictures. “I figured I should document the procession.”
