The suspect who allegedly molested two Jackson Heights girls in the laundry room of their building has been caught. Mario Lopez, 52, has been charged sexually abusing the girls, ages four and nine, on Monday November 12.

Lopez faces two counts of sex abuse, luring a child to commit a crime, burglary and endangering the welfare of a child.

Superintendent Johnny Garcia said that his building, located at 70-35 Broadway, is safe and he can’t believe this happened.

Garcia, who has worked at the building for 20 years, said the laundry room was moved to the first floor of the building from the basement because it was the scene of another sex crime.

Security camera footage, which was released to the public by police, shows a woman who was exiting the building holding the door open for Lopez. Once inside the lobby, he lured the two girls, who were alone, into the laundry room.

The building does have an advanced security camera system. Holding his cell phone and staring at the eight split screens of live video surveillance, Garcia said there really isn’t much more he can do.

“The parents have to do the work, too,” he said. “They should tell kids not to go in the lobby by themselves.”

On Thursday, November 15, Councilman Daniel Dromm, who is a former resident of the building where the crime took place, took to the streets and handed out flyers with information about the suspect.

“Our goal is to protect our children,” said Dromm, who said after the arrest that he was grateful the police were able to apprehend Lopez and that the community was so eager to help.

Lopez is a Level 3 sex offender and was released from prison last January after serving 13 years for sex abuse and kidnapping, according to authorities. If convicted, he faces up to 15 years in jail.
