Easy way to save USPS

Dear Editor:

As usual, we have the Republicans holding up a vote on the fate of the United States Postal Service's possible default based on a strict and ridiculous law passed in 2006 that forces the USPS to "prefund" $5.5 billion in health and retirement benefits.

This law has contributed to the USPS's deficit since it's enactment.

Of course the Republicans have taken a stance that the USPS 's mismanagement is to blame, which probably is true to a certain extent.

So, if they knew this for years, why are they addressing this matter in just the last two years? Because if the Republicans cave before they recess, then it will look like they were forced into an unpopular corner by the Democrats, thus blaming the administration for what they deem as fiscal irresponsibility.

It will be interesting to see who will blame who for the possible loss of tens of thousand of postal jobs.

Why is the USPS being forced to "prefund" out to 75 years? What other institution has been forced to do this?

Sincerely,

Charles Merendino

Woodside
