The Sacred Heart Novice girls won the Bob Koch Annual Sacred Heart tournament in thrilling fashion, avenging an earlier defeat in the tournament against Our Lady of Hope, 19-14.

Prior to the championship game, the girls from Sacred Heart defeated St. Adalberts, St. Ann's, and St. Francis Desales. In between was a loss to Hope, but the squad battled back from the losers bracket in this double elimination tourney to take the trophy.

The St. Francis Desales game was exciting, as a shot with 20 seconds left in the game by Alyssa Siess gave Sacred Heart a 26-25 lead. The defense held, as a last second Desales shot was off the mark. Credit must go to the defensive play all game long by Geraldine Scatyrro, Kayla Lides, Sarah Kuqi, and Jillian Morris. Exceptional ball movement was also key as Giovanna Bonilla and Sam Billera moved the ball with efficiency.

The championship game was against Hope but this time Sacred Heart was up to the task. Although led by Alyssa's 4 first half points, the wildcats were still fit to be tied at the half 7-7. However, the team stepped up their play in the second half, led by Sam Wagner's 5 points and all around exceptional tournament play. Additionally, Kristen Nichols game high 9 points, including 6 from the charity stripe in the second half, was instrumental in the win.

Congratulations to the entire Sacred Heart squad and special mention to the aforementioned Sam Wagner, named tournament All-Star, and Kristen (if they foul me, I will make them pay at the free throw line) Nichols, who was named tournament MVP for her all around great play.

Congratulations as well to coaches Mike Billera and Rich Bonilla on a job well done.
