The festival is the only of its kind in Queens, offering something new for families to enjoy as the warm months arrive. First started five years ago by Valerie Green, owner of Green Space Studios in Long Island City, the festival brings together many dancers for a few days worth of rhythmic fun.
“It’s exciting for Queens,” Green said. “There is nothing like this and it’s making dance history.”
Green decided to create the dance festival in response to the growing community of dancers and choreographers in the borough. Queens was lacking a dance festival and her dance company, Dance Entropy, inaugurated the Green Space Blooms Dance Festival in April 2007.
This year, 29 artists will be performing. The show already began on April 8 but performances are continuing from April 15 until April 17.
One of the other unique points about the show: more than half of the performers are from or live in Queens.
“Having people who live locally come to the festival is what we want,” she said. “And to see a venue with a dance performance so close to home definitely helps.”
There will be a family-oriented performances on Friday at 3:30 and Saturday at 3:00 where the dancers will cater to younger audiences while introducing them to the world of dance.
Green will also be performing with her dance company on Sunday.
Completing each evening is a live music post performance party, sharing music from a different ethnic or classical tradition each night and provided by the Open Music Ensemble.
Green formed Dance Entropy three years after moving to Queens in 1995. In 2005, Green Space Studios was given a permanent home in Long Island City.
The space serves the public by offering discounted services to individual artists and dance companies in its spacious 1200 sq. foot studio. In 2009 the studio expanded by another 600 square feet.
Green Space is conjuring up a new image of Queens with its riveting performances that constantly seek to go beyond the status quo.
The space often holds performances by local dancers and its mission is to embrace the diversity of Queens.
Showtimes and dates for the Green Space Blooms Festival are April 15, 16, and 17 at 8 p.m.
General Admission is $15. Tickets are available at www.Greenspacestudio.org or at the door.
