Teacher contract needed

Dear Editor:

Well, here we are, one year later and still the public school teachers in New York City do not have a new contract. Why? What is the delay with regard to this very critical issue?

The teachers of this city are hard working professionals who deserve a decent, fair and livable wage increase and a new contract! Now, with the threat of over 6,000 teacher layoffs in 2011-12, it is all the more reason for the Department of Education and the United Federation of Teachers to negotiate a new contract.

There should be no more delays for any reason at all.

Also, we should have someone who has educational experience to be the next chancellor, not some noneducational crony of Mayor Michael Bloomberg. The mayor seems to ignore the general will of the public in every situation, and makes decisions without public input.

This is not right at all!

Give the hardworking teachers of this city what they deserve- a fair, just and livable contract, with a decent raise. And treat them as true professionals with the utmost respect.

Sincerely,

Mr. John Amato

Fresh Meadows
