These words embody the experience David Greenhouse wanted each client to experience when walking into Greenhouse Holistic, a hybrid wellness center that is part yoga center and part massage spa.
After graduating from the Swedish Institute of Massage Therapy, Greenhouse noticed that the Williamsburg area had nowhere to practice yoga or to receive the healing benefits of massage.
“Yoga practice and massage therapy are the perfect complement to each other,” said Greenhouse. “We all suffer from some form of stress in our lives. Massage and yoga are [forms of] preventative healthcare, which is very important.”
Greenhouse Holistic opened in 2001, joining a slew of businesses and real estate developers who were helping to rejuvenate Williamsburg.
“The first two years were difficult. It took a while for us to attract clients,” said Greenhouse. Today, the center has over 8,000 clients and 600 regular members.
In addition to yoga, the center also gives classes in belly dance, Tai Chi, and Pilates.
Greenhouse holistic expanded to a second location on the corner of Grand Street and Keap Street and has already finished a third location that will operate as a spa on North 7th Street. The company is also developing a line of handmade all-natural body products, to be called Greenhouse Essentials.
Greenhouse also dreams of one day operating from a single site. In the meantime, he's lucky for what he has.
“If I can give people a chance to relax in a peaceful environment it is a way to support people in these times,” he said. “I know people are out of work and I’m grateful that they would still come to me even in a recession.”
